Here Is How to Spend the Day on Thunder Island in Oregon

There are tons of unique spots in the Columbia River Gorge just waiting to be discovered. If you’re looking to leisurely enjoy the beauty of our area, we recommend visiting Thunder Island in Oregon. Here, you will see gorgeous views of the surrounding water and mountains, plus all the action of boats and barges on the water.

History of Thunder Island

Thunder Island is a man-made island that was created in 1890. This land was once part of the mainland but was carved out to build the Cascade Locks and Canal. Thanks to the new locks and canal, ships now have safe passage around the rapids to travel through the Columbia River.

How Do You Get to Thunder Island in Oregon?

Thunder Island is easy to get to. It is just a short walk away from the mainland; all you need to do is cross a small footbridge.

What Will I Find on Thunder Island?

Thunder Island is the perfect place to come enjoy the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge. You’ll see sweeping views of the surrounding river and towering mountains. Plus, the famous Bridge of Gods is standing proudly in the distance. If you want great views without the strenuous activity of a hike or bike ride, make the trip to this scenic island.

We recommend packing a picnic and bringing the camera. Grab a bottle of wine at one of the many wineries in our area, then enjoy a romantic meal outdoors with your sweetheart. There are plenty of maintained lawns to spread a blanket on, or you can opt for one of the picnic tables scattered throughout the island. After your picnic, take a scenic walk around the perimeter to see different angles of the river. You could spend hours watching the boats, kayaks, and sailboats float by.

Continue Enjoying the Cascade Locks

On the mainland near Thunder Island, you will find the Cascade Locks Marine Park. Here, there are even more activities to fill your day with. Inspired by the island, a visit to Thunder Island Brewing is the perfect way to end your day. The taproom is open every day of the week, and they have delicious food pairings to go with the beer. Plus, there are historic sites, museums, river cruises, and other restaurants for you to enjoy here.
