The official start to winter is still a couple of weeks away, but the cold snowy winter weather has already come to portions of the Columbia Gorge, including on beautiful Mount Hood. That means it’s a great time to get out and enjoy all the top things to do in the Columbia River Gorge in the winter, including Nordic skiing at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort on Mount Hood. Nordic skiing or cross-country skiing is one of the best winter sports. Not only is it accessible for many, but it can be enjoyed just about anywhere you go – including on a variety of trails throughout the Columbia Gorge.
There are few things more beautiful than spending a sunny winter afternoon cross-country skiing, whether at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort or elsewhere – an activity perhaps only bested by a majestic snowshoeing adventure through the breathtaking Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Cross-country skiing is also great exercise, tons of fun, and a great way to experience our winter wonderland.

Ski at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort
Earlier this year, we talked about some of the incredible downhill skiing available on Mount Hood at places like Timberline Lodge and Mount Hood Meadows. This month, we’re taking a look at an entirely different winter sport found at Mount Hood – cross-country skiing. One of the best places to enjoy Nordic-style or cross-country skiing on Mount Hood is Cooper Spur Mountain Resort.
There’s a nordic center at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort that offers 6.5 beautiful kilometers of cross-country skiing, with both traditional single-track style skiing and skate-style skiing trails available. The nordic center at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort is open in mid-December from 9 am – 4 pm and generally stays open through March or as long as conditions allow. One of the things that make the Cooper Spur Mountain Resort such an appealing place to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is the fewer crowds you’ll find here, especially when compared to other destinations on Mount Hood like Mount Hood Meadows.
Cooper Spur Mountain Resort grooms its trail weekly during the weekends, ensuring you always have a wonderful cross-country skiing adventure. There are also snowshoeing trails available at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort, and they offer lessons and rentals for both of these exciting winter sports.
Of course, we love the nordic center at Cooper Spur Mountain Resort, but it’s not the only place to enjoy cross-country skiing near Mount Hood. There’s also a nordic center at Mount Hood Meadows, and there is cross-country skiing available at Teacup Nordic in the Mount Hood area. Moreover, there are hundreds of miles of trails to explore in the broader Mt. Hood National Forest.
