Skiing at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood
Mount Hood is an incredible destination for outdoor adventure any time of year, but in the winter, it’s a winter wonderland for snowsport enthusiasts! During the winter, Mount Hood is a mecca for skiers and snowboarders in the area. It’s only 50 miles from Portland and 35 miles from Hood River and offers a variety of ski areas for all experience levels and personalities. There’s also much more to do on Mount Hood than simply ski, including at Timberline Lodge.
There are four main ski areas at Mount Hood, with Timberline Lodge being a perennial favorite. The alpine experience at Timberline lodge is unique, with more than 4,500 vertical feet to descend, the most of any ski resort in the country. Thanks to its location at the peak of Mount Hood, Timberline Lodge is the only ski area in the country to be open a fantastic ten months out of the year.
The lift system at Timberline Lodge is interesting, too, with 6 High-Speed Quads, 2 Doubles, 1 Surface, and 2 Passenger Snowcats transporting you to various jumping-off points for your downhill alpine adventure. Timberline Lodge is also well-known for its varied terrain parks, which are industry-leading and open throughout the year.
If you want to visit Timberline Lodge but aren’t into downhill skiing or snowboarding, there are other snow-based activities for you to enjoy here, including snowshoeing, tubing, and snowcat rides. It’s truly an adventure for the ages!
Of course, Timberline Lodge is just one of the great Mount Hood ski areas waiting for you. The other three ski areas to consider while in the area are Mount Hood Meadows, Hood River Skibowl, and the Cooper Spur Ski Area.
- Mount Hood Meadows is the largest ski resort on Mt. Hood and is often the most crowded. With 2,150 skiable acres, Mount Hood Meadows offers 11 lifts and 87 trails, with the longest ski run at an astonishing three miles. They also provide opportunities for night skiing, a truly magical experience.
- At Hood River Skibowl, you’ll find 69 runs, 36 of which are fully lit for night skiing. The runs vary from steep black diamonds to gentle green runs for the newest skiers. There’s something for everyone here, which is why it’s a popular place to ski Mount Hood. They also operate Mount Hood’s only conveyor-assisted tube hill for an entirely different kind of fun in the snow!
- If you’re looking for a smaller, more old-school ski experience on Mount Hood, consider heading to Cooper Spur Ski Area.
