Things to do in the Columbia River Gorge in Fall

Each time we get closer to a seasonal transition here in the Columbia River Gorge, we think, “This one is our favorite.” That’s what we’re thinking as we begin the gradual transition from summer to fall. With mild and pleasant fall weather typical in the Pacific Northwest, there are just as many things to do in the Columbia River Gorge as during the summer, but often, there are far fewer crowds to compete with. If that’s enough of a reason to love it more, then the hillsides ablaze in the fiery hues of autumn would be enough to convert even the most devoted summer enthusiast.

Fall is a magical season here in the gorge, and we already feel excited for the transition to come. Washington may not have a New-England-sized reputation for fall foliage, but we assure you, the fall colors here are simply spectacular. The bright pops of varying shades of yellow, orange, and red contrast perfectly with the deep evergreen hue we enjoy for much of the year. Fall is a great time to hit the trails for some hiking and biking, but it’s also an exceptional time to visit Columbia Gorge wineries, chase waterfalls, and otherwise enjoy a restful getaway at our cabins in Washington.

Our Cabins in Washington are a true nature-lovers paradise. Our nine acres are situated right in the heart of this magnificent area, with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to the north and the Columbia River Gorge to the south. With so many things to do in the Columbia River Gorge, you won’t have to worry for a second about boredom- unless you want to be! However you like to spend your time away from home, let us treat you to a taste of our exceptional hospitality and share our little slice of paradise with you this fall. Things to do in the Columbia River Gorge in Fall

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – there are so many things to do in the Columbia River Gorge that it’s truly a destination for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the miles of hiking and biking at their fingertips, foodies will love the many area restaurants, farms, and wineries, and tired parents or romantic couples will love our oasis-like cabins in Washington. It’s truly a win-win for everyone!

The activities you choose to engage in while you’re here will, of course, depend on your interests – but the list of things to do in the Columbia River Gorge in the fall looks a bit like it does in the summer – packed with options! Each fall, this area truly takes your breath away. We’d love to share it with you this year, so below, find some inspiration in some of our favorite things to do in the Columbia River Gorge, and let’s get planning!

  1. As with summer, fall is an exceptional time to go hiking – this activity consistently ranks as one of our favorite things to do in the Columbia River Gorge – even when we have to don a pair of snowshoes! We have a list of great Gorge hikes for fall foliage, but two of our favorite fall foliage hikes are the Cape Horn Trail and Hamilton Mountain.
  2. With the busy summer crowds behind us, fall is a great time to chase the biggest and best Columbia River Gorge waterfalls!
  3. Take scenic drives this fall, marveling at the vibrant explosions of color everywhere you turn. Great drives include the curvy road up to the Rowena Crest Viewpoint, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic view from the top, and the Historic Columbia River Highway, one of the most stunning drives in the entire state of Oregon (no matter the season).
  4. You don’t have to work very hard for great views of the area. One of our favorite things to do in the Columbia River Gorge in the fall is to take in the colors from the Vista House at Crown Point.
  5. Fall also just so happens to be harvest season at area wineries, so what better to add to our list of things to do in the Columbia River Gorge each fall than some wine tasting at local vineyards? There is plenty to choose from, but how about wine tasting with a view? Head to Syncline Winery for that!
