Pittock Mansion History
The history of the Pittock Mansion in Portland Oregon is filled with grandiose and scandal. Built in 1914, the estate was created for one of the most influential families in Oregon, Henry and Georgiana Pittock. After moving up the ranks of the newspaper world, Henry Pittock became the owner of The Oregonian and established a real estate empire along with some other business ventures. While the family was loved and admired, scandal occurred when a councilman released that the family had illegally brought a water line to their home at the city’s expense.
Pittock Mansion Restoration
In 1958, the last of the Pittocks moved out of the home and put it on the market. There was both contemplation to tear it down due to damages it faced in bad weather as well as talk to turn the property into a subdivision. However, the citizens of Portland decided instead to band together and start a fundraising campaign to save the property. After raising more than $67,000, the City of Portland decided to purchase the property and work on its restoration. 15 months later, the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon, is back to its original grandeur.
