As summer gets further behind us in our rearview mirror and we turn our attention to the gorgeous fall at hand and even the quiet winter months ahead, it’s time to consider rainy-day getaways in the Pacific Northwest. Rainy and even snowy weather is certainly on the horizon in the Columbia River Gorge, but this is the perfect season for introspection, relaxation, and romance. And, yes, it’s the ideal season for getting away to our luxury Columbia River Gorge cabins, where you can enjoy top-rated attractions like the Maryhill Museum of Art.
If you haven’t experienced a fall or winter getaway in the Columbia River Gorge, you really must. These seasons bring a much more peaceful atmosphere to your getaways and a sense of tranquility that can be hard to find during the busier seasons. The cooler weather invites exploration along the gorge’s scenic trails and viewpoints, and with fewer people in the area, you can truly appreciate the grandeur of this natural wonder. Whether driving along the historic Columbia River Highway or stopping for a quiet moment at Multnomah Falls, the crisp air and moody skies set the stage for a memorable getaway.
On a rainy afternoon, you can pause the outdoor adventures (or don rain gear!) and delve into the cultural side of the Columbia River Gorge. That means visiting local wine-tasting rooms, enjoying farm-to-table meals at local restaurants, and visiting attractions like the Maryhill Museum of Art. It’s the perfect indoor escape with its eclectic art collection, from Native American artifacts to works by Rodin. You can also enjoy the museum’s impressive views of the gorge and Columbia River, providing a beautiful contrast to the cozy interior.
For lodging, you’ll find nothing more special or relaxing than our beautiful Columbia Gorge cabins on the Washington side of the Gorge near White Salmon and Hood River. Our cabins are well-appointed and welcome retreat from whatever the weather is doing outside. Whether you’re enjoying a soak in our generous soaking tubs or relaxing by the fire, Carson Ridge Cabins provide the perfect base for your upcoming retreats. Visit the Maryhill Museum of Art
The Maryhill Museum of Art is about an hour from our cabins in Washington and well worth the trip. It’s perfect for rainy day adventures – but you shouldn’t wait for rain to enjoy this fantastic museum. The Maryhill Museum of Art is a one-of-a-kind experience in the Columbia River Gorge, blending a diverse art collection with a rich historical background. Housed in a grand mansion with stunning views of the river, the museum showcases everything from European and American paintings to Native American artifacts and fashion pieces from Queen Marie of Romania’s wardrobe.
Current exhibits at the Maryhill Museum of Art include the following:
- The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea, which highlights stunning landscape paintings of the Columbia River.
- King Salmon: Contemporary Relief Prints, focusing on intricate woodblock prints of salmon.
- Portraits Across Borders, highlighting the art and language arts of Goldendale High School students.
- An installation of the Late Artist D.E. May, a local artist who drew inspiration from daily life.
The Maryhill Museum of Art is open daily from mid-March through mid-November and is the perfect destination for nature lovers and art lovers alike. It’s situated on a bluff overlooking the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge. When it opened in 1940, Time Magazine called it “the world’s most isolated art museum.” The site features over 5,000 acres on the Gorge and is surrounded by wild spaces and ranch lands. In addition to the beautiful art collection, the Maryhill Museum of Art features gorgeous gardens and grounds, including the William and Catherine Dickson Sculpture Park, the Lewis and Clark Overlook, and a Native Plant Garden.
A short distance away is the historic Maryhill Loops Road. It was the first macadam asphalt-paved road in the Pacific Northwest and once served as the only connection between the Columbia River and Goldendale, Washington. This is also where you’ll find one of the most fascinating roadside attractions in the area—museum founder Sam Hill’s full-size replica of England’s Stonehenge. This monument is open daily, and ceremonies are held there throughout the year.
