If you’re looking for a mix of dramatic views, memorable Washington hikes, and a chance to unplug for a few days, a getaway to the Columbia River Gorge checks all the boxes. This area along the Washington-Oregon border is known for its towering cliffs, waterfalls, and forested trails that offer some of the most scenic hiking in the Pacific Northwest. A must-see for outdoor lovers is Beacon Rock State Park, where you can hike to the top of an ancient volcanic core for panoramic views of the Gorge and Columbia River below. The switchback trail is short but steep, with railings and handrails that make the climb manageable and the payoff worth it.

Beyond the hiking, the Columbia River Gorge has plenty to keep you inspired and entertained. Explore the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, take a leisurely drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway, or plan an afternoon of wine tasting at one of the many nearby vineyards. In spring and early summer, the wildflower blooms are especially photogenic, and in the fall, the foliage adds rich color to every viewpoint. Waterfall-chasers will love stops like Multnomah Falls, and there are plenty of spots for kayaking, windsurfing, or just relaxing with a good view.

What to Know About Beacon Rock State Park

Beacon Rock State Park is one of the standout destinations in the Columbia River Gorge, not just for its views but also for its fascinating geological story. The park gets its name from the 848-foot monolith that towers above the river.

Beacon Rock is what remains of an ancient volcano. It’s one of the largest monoliths in North America and an impressive sight whether you’re climbing it or just admiring it from below. And it’s only 15 minutes from our cabins in Washington!

Hiking Up Beacon Rock in Washington

The main attraction here is the Beacon Rock State Park trails. The main trail up Beacon Rock is short but steep, coming in at just under a mile. It’s one of the most unique Washington State hikes, featuring more than 50 switchbacks that zigzag up this historic volcanic cone. Railings and a well-maintained path make it accessible to most hikers, and there are plenty of spots to stop and rest.

Once you reach the top, you’ll welcome a cool breeze and enjoy views from the summit stretch up and down the Columbia River Gorge. Shaded rocks amongst the trees at the top offer places to rest and take a sip of water while you relish in the gorgeous views. For those looking to extend their time on the trails, Beacon Rock State Park also offers access to the dog-friendly Hamilton Mountain Trail.

The Hamilton Mountain Trail is a more challenging hike in Washington, but it features waterfalls, wildflowers, and plenty of dramatic viewpoints along the way. This trail is 7.5 miles roundtrip, but it’s one of the best hikes in the Columbia River Gorge – especially if you’re looking for wildflower hikes! After about a mile, you’ll reach the Hardy Falls viewpoint, quickly followed by the more impressive Rodney Falls and Pool of the Winds. The rest of the trail is pretty steep, but the views of the Cascade Mountains at the top are more than worth it!

There’s more to do at Beacon Rock State Park than just hike. The park includes picnic areas, river access for boating and fishing, and a network of other trails for biking or a more casual stroll. Rock climbers can test their skills on designated routes, and nature lovers will appreciate the variety of birds and plant life throughout the area.

Whether you’re there to challenge yourself on the trails or just take in the views, Beacon Rock State Park is a “must-see” stop in the Columbia River Gorge. It’s also an easy way to get a dose of adventure without straying too far from your cabin.
