Yesterday our friend Duane Huber brought us some lovely fresh steelhead, just out of the Columbia River. Boy, was that a delicious dinner! We’re so lucky that our cabins in the Columbia River Gorge are centrally located for all kinds of fishing! In fact, Field & Stream Magazine named Hood River the Best Gamefishing Destination. Can’t beat that!
Duane’s your guy when it comes to fishing around here. He owns River Run Guide Service, and he’s wise to all the best fishing spots up and down the Columbia. Steelhead season is still going strong right now, so Duane also brought us a nice supply of freshly-smoked steelhead to use in our very popular smoked fish hash. Our Hood River cabins are a bed and breakfast, and we always try to provide original, localized gourmet meals.
Duane’s a man of many talents – sometimes we serve his smoked cheese as well as his smoked steelhead and salmon. Yum.
Steelhead are widely regarded by avid fly-and boat-fishers as the most entertaining challenge, pound for pound. They’re an ocean-going trout so they aren’t especially large, but they do like to give you a run for your money.
There’s still time to book a Fishing Package at our Inn at the Gorge. You can spend some time with Duane and those frisky steelhead on the river, and return to your comfy, luxurious cabin in the evening. Perhaps enjoy an in-cabin massage to soothe your muscles after playing fish all day. And in the morning, we’ll treat you to a piping hot breakfast. Maybe you’ll even get some of that famous smoked steelhead hash.
The steelhead are only here for a limited engagement. But if you can’t get here before steelhead season ends, no worries. Our equally famous fall Chinook salmon run is yet another not-to-miss fishing opportunity. We’ll hold one of our Hood River cabins for you. How ‘bout the Fishing Creel?
