The ending of summer and beginning of fall is a magical time in Hood River. The air becomes crisp as the leaves begin changing. The Gorge slowly shifts from green to brilliant hues of red and yellow as if welcoming the autumn season. This enchanting time of year also brings many events and festivals, like Hood River Hops Fest. This annual celebration brings people together over one of the main ingredients in beer: hops. If you love beer, you will love this festival!
The Hood River Hops Fest is an annual event that brings people together through beer tastings. The 2017 festival takes places October 7. Local breweries from all over the Pacific Northwest participate to bring festival goers exquisite beer to try from the area. Over 50 breweries participate from Oregon and Washington, and the number grows every year! Guests of this hoppy festival get the opportunity to try more than 60 beers, shop around at local craft booths, and listen to live music from the main stage. Plus, you get a commemorative glass mug to take home!
The Hood River Hops Fest is a beer lover’s dream. When you walk into the venue, stretches of pavement are lined on both sides with tents hosting a variety of beers. Go from tent to tent to meet the creators of your favorite Pacific Northwest beers, or go try some new ones you have never heard of before. Take a break between tastings with some local cuisine as you listen to the bands play on the main stage, then go right back to the tasting tents. Try as many as you can, then vote for the people’s choice award for the best beer!
The Hood River Hops Fest not only celebrates beer but one of the key ingredients: hops. Hops are basically what gives a beer flavor. They usually have a bitter taste, and provide balance and depth to the beverage. These days, beer fanatics look for high IBUs, or international bittering units, when choosing their favorite brews. The annual hops harvest takes place from mid-August to mid-September in this area, making a September festival the perfect time to celebrate all the hard work growers have put into their plants. This area is known for their abundance of fresh hops, so the local breweries can harness the flavors and get incredibly creative!
