About the Whistle Punk Trail in Carson, WA

Train tracks near the Columbia River in Washington.

The Whistle Punk Trail in Carson, WA, is an interpretive trail that combines history and nature. The loop is about 1.5 miles long and very easy. This is a walking path only, so you won’t have to watch out for bikers or motorists on your stroll. The crushed, compact gravel surface makes it perfect for all levels of adventurers.

The History

This fun loop was created to pay homage to the Pacific Northwest’s logging past. “Whistle punk” was the name given to a logger with an important job; they needed to signal the operators to let them know a log was ready to be moved. Along the Whistle Punk Trail, you’ll find signs that tell their story. You’ll get to learn all about what it meant to be a logger. The path itself runs along an old railroad grade, making it the perfect spot. There are also a few wood and metal artifacts dotting the trail.

Local tip: Make sure to look closely so you can spot the artifacts. The forest has grown over many of these relics, making them hard to spot.

The Nature

The Whistle Punk Trail is a stunning walk that wanders past a wetland area and through an old-growth forest. The entire way, you’ll be surrounded by towering trees and dense vegetation. The majority of the learning opportunities are in the first ¾ section of the loop. Then, you enter into the nature portion. See tree varieties such as Oregon ash and hemlocks. When you reach the wetlands, there is an observation deck to pause at. You’ll notice that the trees are so tall that the canopy overhead will create nice shade from the sun.

Do I Need a Permit?

If you are planning on embarking on the Whistle Punk Trail, you will need a valid Recreation Pass. If you aren’t going anywhere else that requires a pass during your stay at Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins, all you need to do is get a day pass!
